Imagine experiencing a true musical community for five whole days - like being on tour, but slowly!
The Annual Floating Tionol is a water based summer school and festival of Traditional Irish Uilleann piping that weaves its way along the Thames from Oxford. It is a completely unique event and, indeed, attracts visitors from all over the world each year, bringing together those kindred spirits who are all passionate about pipes.
Top-level tuition in all aspects of Uilleann piping, from playing techniques, learning tunes, to reed-making and pipe maintenance
from a world-class piper or maker, is a central part of the trip.
However, there are also plenty of opportunities to helm the boat if you feel like it, hang out and talk with the other crew members, to visit the beautiful historic city of Oxford, or to just relax as you roll on past Oxfordshire’s gorgeous rural scenery at little more than walking pace!
To end the days, every night there are sessions in different riverside pubs. All we can say, is from experience these sessions have been superb and, as the Floating Tionol has become well-known in Oxfordshire’s prolific folk music scene aswell, they are more often than not blinding nights of music to be had! With many different musicians being attracted along.
All levels of piping are catered for, from first-timers to professionals.

Other floating French and Border Pipe Floating Tionol, May 2007
Following the success of the Floating Tionol, another floating holiday is in the “pipeline”! This time, for all lovers of the French and Border pipes.
This Tionol will follow roughly the same format as the Uilleann Tionol, with nightly French music sessions along the Thames, and expert tuition from a top player.

Floating Sea Shanty Festival
The DooLallys are currently trying to raise funding to put on this event. We hope to hire a classic sailing boat off the coast of Cornwall and have a long weekend of sea shanty workshops – in a totally authentic setting!
